Used to help people breathe better, the popular decongestant has been around for a long time, but does it actually have any effect on bed bugs? The answer is maybe.
In a straightforward sense, it cannot be said that Vicks VapoRub will get rid of bed bugs, as there is no scientific backingfor the hack. It's also important to note that, if you already have spotted bed bugs, the best thing to do is either call an exterminator or buy specialist products to save the problem from getting worse. However, if you're just curious and want to be prepared for any future bed bug outbreaks, here's what you need to know about why the cold and flu remedy could have an effect on the nasty critters.

The next time you see those telltale red bites, you can tryapplying generous amounts of Vicks VapoRub to the edges of your bed frame. The logic behind this hack is that bed bugs despise strong odors, especially those containing mint. The smell of VapoRub is extremely strong thanks to the potent mixture of camphor, menthol, and eucalyptus it contains, hence why some believe it can ward off bed bugs. Nevertheless, as with all hacks, there are downsides. Firstly, using VapoRub won't entirely stop an infestation, and as mentioned, you'll need to take stronger measures to fully remove bed bugs.
Secondly, Vicks is designed to adhere to the skin, so it may make your bed greasy and take a while to thoroughly remove. Thirdly, inhaling too much Vicks can actually be detrimental to your own health and cause issues like difficulty breathing and allergic reactions, per the Missouri Poison Center. If you want to stop bed bugs in their tracks for a few hours while you figure out what to do, try this hack. However, don't rely on it to rid yourself of a bed bug infestation.
