Your risk profile is determined by a number of factors. In this profile, the insurer will look at your claim history, where you live and how the vehicle is stored during the day and at night as well as several other factors. Additional security measures installed in your vehicle are often also taken into account. Finally, the excess that you select will determine your final monthly premiums.

What colours are cheaper to insure?

Yes, it is true. There is a difference when it comes to the colour vehicle you wish to insure. Much of this boils down to the fact that some colours are more visible on the road than others. Dark colours, blacks, greys and blues, are often harder to see than bright colours. This means that colours such as white, yellow, red and orange are easier to see and as a result, less likely to be involved in an accident when compared to the darker colours. Vehicles that are less prone to accidents are thus cheaper to insure.

If you're looking for the best deal on insurance, your safest bet is to go with a light colour (except silver). White will be amongst the cheapest to insure for more than just its brightness. Find out if scratch and dent insurance is worth the premium here.

The type of paint is also taken into account. Flat, gloss colours work out cheaper because they cost less to apply. Metallic paints with their expensive clear coats and pearlescent colours are difficult to match and cost more to repair. These will attract higher insurance premiums. The same goes for silver, which is notoriously difficult to match.

Fun fact:Did you know that silver paint contains more colours than just black, white or blue? You will find yellows, greens and reds in silver paint.
