    Chicagos Design 10A is a rugged multi-purpose centrifugalfanequipped with Backward Inclined wheels suited for harshdutyapplications. With heavier blades to resist erosion andcorrosion,the Design 10A fan provides reliable operation incontaminated airwith minimal maintenance. Similar BI wheels areused in ChicagosSQB fans for alternate duty applications. For cleanairstreams,Chicagos airfoil bladed fans are recommended.

  • 3CLASS IIMeets specifications for mostgeneral industrialapplications.Features heavy gauge housingswith continuously weldedscroll.Sizes 49 to 73 for pressuresthrough 12". Refer toChicagosSQB fan for smaller sizes.

    CLASS IIISame rugged construction asClass II with additionalhousingbracing and wheels reinforcedwith a stiffener ring. Fansareequipped with heavier shaftsand bearings. Sizes 49 to 60forpressures through 14". Refer toChicagos SQB for smallersizes.

    CLASS IVStill heavier gauge housings,shafts, bearings and twowheelstiffener rings. Class IV D/10Afans are practical alternativesforinstallations where less efficientradial blades wereconsiderednecessary. Sizes 22-1/4 to 49for pressures through24".

    Chicago Blowers wheels feature backward inclined solid steelbladescontinuously welded to a streamlined wheel cone and heavysteelbackplate. The fans can withstand temperatures to 800 whenusedin conjunction with a shaft cooler and shaft seal. These wheelshavetrue non-overloading horsepower characteristics,mechanicalefficiency over 80% and a steep stable pressure curve,ideal forapplications with pressure variations. Should actualsystem pressurereach 30% higher than the pressure anticipated,delivered volumeof the Design 10A would be typically reduced byonly 10%.

    Chicagos D/10A performs reliably in many installations thattradi-tionally use radial bladed fans. Backward inclined blades aremoreefficient than radial blades, allowing the use of smaller,lower horse-power motors properly sized for the fans operatinghorsepower. Allclasses of Chicagos BI fans exceed AMCA performancestandards.

    Chicago BlowerCorporation certi-fies that the Design10A Fansshown orherein are licensedto bear the AMCASeal. The ratingsshownare based ontests and procduresperformed inaccordance withAMCAPublication 211 and complywith the requirements of theAMCACertified Ratings Program.

  • IINLET VOLUMECONTROLWhen the fan is used for varyingor partialload applications, theInlet Volume Control (IVC) pro-vides preciseair control andmore efficient operation.Adjustable guide vanespre-spin the incoming air in thesame rotation as the wheeltoproduce the desired volume ofair at the exact pressure.

    Vanes are mounted entirely with-in the inlet cone. Automaticcon-trol is achieved by adding an elec-tric or pneumatic actuator.TheIVC is suitable for manual opera-tion to 650F andautomaticoperation to 350F.

    PUNCHED FLANGEDINLET/OUTLETFormed ring inlet is punched forinlet duct connection. Heavyangle flange can be welded totheoutlet, either punched orunpunched.

    INLET COLLARInlet connection collar is availablefor slipconnection to ductwork ora flexible joint.

    INLET SCREENThe welded steel wire protectivescreen mounts withinthe inletcone or outside the Inlet VolumeControl, whenfurnished.

    SHAFT SEALA non-contact seal mountedbetween steel plates reducesleak-age through the shaft opening inthe housing.

    SHAFT COOLER AND GUARDCast aluminum cooling wheelwith expandedmetal guard raisesthe allowable temperature limit forarrangement 1or 9 fans from300F to 650F. Adding a shaftseal on arrangement 1fansextends the limit to 800F.Refer to page 6 for hightempera-ture/RPM deration factors.

    OUTLET DAMPERSDampers offer an economicalalternative to IVCs.However, theyrequire substantially more horse-power at reduced airvolume.Dampers for all fan classes havedouble thickness airfoilblades,and are available with parallel oropposed blade rotatinglouvres.

    Dampers have punched flangeson both ends and are suitableformanual or automatic operation. Amatching punched flangedoutletis required for mounting. Alternateconstruction is availablefor dirtyor high temperature applications.

    EXTENDED GREASE FITTINGSGrease fittings allow forexternallubricationwithout removal of shaftand bearing guard.

    PLUG TYPE ACCESS DOORBolted, round door is raised 4" off thescroll to provide clearancefor insulation and includesanasbestos-free gasket.

    HOUSING DRAINA half coupling is welded to thelowest point of thehousing. Avail-able with or without drain plug.

    INLET BOXThe bolt-on inlet box simplifiesductwork connectionwhen astraight horizontal connection isnot feasible. Assuresdependablefan performance when a sharpturn is required at the faninlet.

    SHAFT AND BEARING GUARDThe expanded metal guardencloses theshaft and bearings.For easier lubrication, extendedgrease fittingsare recommended.

    BELT GUARDThree sides are fully enclosed with expanded metal onthefourth side for ventilation andvisual inspection. Easilyremovedfor drive servicing.

    ACCESS DOORThe flush mounted door featuresquick opening tensionclampswith neoprene gasket to 300Fand asbestos-free gasket to800F.

    SPLIT HOUSINGSTo facilitate wheel removal, fanscan be furnishedwith horizontalsplit housings. Housing splits arecaulked and boltedwhen the fanis shipped assembled. Split housings are standard onSizes 66 and above.

    SPARK RESISTANT CONSTRUCTIONAMCA Type C spark resistantcon-struction substitutes an aluminuminlet cone and adds a drivesidealuminum buffing tube betweenthe wheel, shaft andhousing.Available with all classes and sizes,arrangement 1 and 9,Maximumtemperature is 600F. Not avail-able when the fan isequippedwith an IVC. Requires customer toelectrically groundfan.

    UNITARY BASEFan and adjustable motor baseare welded onto aunitary base ofcontinuously welded structuralsteel channel. (Referto page 17for dimensions.)

    SPECIAL PAINTAND CORROSIONRESISTANT COATINGSNumerous coatingsare availableto meet the most stringent specifications.

  • High Temperature andAltitude Fan SelectionChicago Design 10AType B Centrifugal Fans areperfectly suited for handling hot gasesfor air at hightemperature applications such as induced draftandindustrial ovens. Fans in arrangements 1. 8. and 9Hare capableof temperatures up to 800F with theaddition of a shaft seal andshaft cooler, whilearrangement 9 (L or R) fans have a maximumtem-perature of 650F. All fans should be operated withinthe maximumRPM limits for each class and theselimits should be derated permaximum allowablespeed, Table III.

    Fan capacity tables are based on the fan handlingstandard air at70F and sea level. For operatingconditions other than standard,correct the HP of thefan and check the speed derating limits.

    EXAMPLE: Select a fan to handle 45,000 CFM at 5.5"SP at 700F andat 2000 feet altitude.

    1. Refer to Table 1. At 700 F and 2000 feet altitude,thecorrection factor is 2.35

    2. Corrected SP is 2.35 X 5.5" = 13" SP at 70F andsea level.

    3. Using the fan rating tables, selection of the propersize fanis now based on 45,000 CFM at 13" SP.These specifications indicatethat one selectionavailable is the size 40-1/4 Class IV fanwhichshows a performance of 45,000 CFM at 13" SP,requiring 130.7BHP at 1495 RPM.

    4. To correct the BHP, divide 130.7 by 2.35 = 55.61BHP, which isthe corrected BHP at 700F and2000 feet altitude.

    5. Verify the wheel and shaft maximum speedsusing Table II andTable III.

    a. Multiply the class maximum wheel speed fromTable II by theClass IV Wheel Deration Factorfrom Table III. The wheel maximumspeed @ 700F is 2088 RPM x .86 = 1796 RPM. Thenmultiply the maximumshaft speed from Table IIby the Shaft Deration Factor from TableIII. Theshaft maximum speed @ 700F is 2088 x .94= 1963. Thus, themaximum allowable fanspeed is 1796 RPM.

    b. Check the above maximum allowable fanspeed against theselected fan RPM. Sincethe fan operating speed of 1495 RPM iswithinsafe limits of the maximum allow-able of 1796 RPM, the 40-1/4 ClassIV fanwill deliver 45,000 CFM at 5.5" SP, 700Fand 2000 feetaltitude requiring 55.61 HP.

    Design 10A Fans withBackwardInclinedWheels

    GENERAL:Provide a high performance, low mainte-

    nance, centrifugal fan with backward inclined

    wheel and hyperbolic wheel cone. Fan shall

    be licensed to bear the AMCA Certified

    Ratings Seal for Air Performance based on

    tests and procedures in accordance with

    AMCA standard 211. Fans must be manufac-

    tured and assembled in the U.S.A. Acceptable

    vendors: Chicago Blower Corporation

    PERFORMANCE: Performance shall include steep pressure and

    non-overloading horsepower characteristics.

    Mechanical efficiency shall be no less than

    80%. Wheel inlet cone to be designed to

    ensure smooth, stable air flow across the

    entire operating range. System static pressure

    changes of 30% shall result in an approximate

    10% volume reduction.

    HOUSING:Fan housing shall be of welded, heavy gauge

    construction with seven common discharge

    positions. Scroll is to be continuously welded.

    ROTOR:Wheel shall have cast iron hub (steel hub on

    sizes 40-1/4, 44-1/2 and 49) lock bolted to a

    heavy backplate. Blades must be single sheet,

    high strength low alloy steel, continuously

    welded to the backplate and hyperbolic

    wheel cone. Wheels to be statically and

    dynamically balanced to G 6.3 standards in

    accordance with ISO 1940 and ANSI S2.19

    specifications. Shaft shall be turned, ground

    and polished 1045 hot rolled steel straight-

    ened to a maximum T.I.R. of .002 inches

    and mounted using heavy duty ball or roller

    pillow block bearings. Shaft critical speed shall

    not be less than 1.25 times maximum RPM.

    MOUNTING:Housing and base assembly complete with

    integral mounting angles for connection to

    foundation. Adjustable motor base to be

    welded to base or channel.

    FACTORY MOUNTED MOTORS AND DRIVES(Accessory)Motors and drives tobe factory mounted.

    Unit to be tested at running speed for vibra-

    tion and balance. Filtered vibration readings,

    taken at bearings, are not to exceed 0.15

    inches per second.
