What is the topic of Letrs Unit 5? ›

In unit 5, Oral Language and Vocabulary, participants will gain an understanding of the importance of vocabulary, knowing vocabulary words in depth, determining which words to directly teach, techniques for introducing new words, effective ways to practice new words, and how to create a language-rich classroom.

(Children do not know all the same word meanings. Thus, you need to find good contexts for—and teach—20 to 25 word meanings per week if children are to acquire 10 new meanings per week.) If children do acquire 10 word meanings per school week, they can acquire 300–400 new meanings per year.

In the primary grades, about 10 words per week can be taught in-depth.

Time to complete LETRS

The time to complete the reading, online, and Bridge to Practice activities will vary, but as a rough guide, each volume takes approximately 48-60 hours of individual study to complete.

Unit assessments (10 questions) are given at the end of each LETRS unit. Volumes 1 and 2 each have four unit assessments. The unit assessment is not timed, and you can reference your notes or manual.

The most challenging aspect for novice writers in English is a verb in the sentence. Students also find it challenging to understand the difference between 'is' and 'are' as main and helping verbs. For most of them, these verbs cannot be main verbs.

Tier one consists of the most basic words. These words rarely require direct instruction and typically do not have multiple meanings. Sight words, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and early reading words occur at this level. Examples of tier one words are: book, girl, sad, run, dog, and orange.

Average vocabulary increases from an estimated 3500 root word meanings at the beginning of kindergarten, to 6000 root words at the end of the second grade, to approximately 20,000 root words by fifth grade.

There are guidelines for how much time kids should spend on homework. The NEA recommends something called the “10-minute rule.” Based on this rule, students should spend about 10 minutes per grade level on homework every night. That means a second grader will usually be able to finish in about 20 minutes.
