I really enjoyed the opportunity to present our flavour poster which detailed a proposed body of work for developing a sugar-free, strawberry cheesecake flavoured chewing gum. Thank you toThe UK Flavour Association for sponsoring the prize!

Recently, my placement at Premier Foods as a Sweet Treats Student Technologist sadly came to an end. Over the course of my placement, I have had the opportunity to launch products, develop recipes, lead factory trials and assist in the monitoring and reviewing of products post-launch.I’ve developed both professionally and personally over the course of my placement, and that’s thanks to the talented and knowledgable people that I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by. I’m now looking forward to returning to The University of Nottingham to complete the final year of my Food Science degree!

Recently, I launched my first product! Mr Kipling Hot Cross Pies are a fun twist on the Easter classic. Spiced with Easter flavours, they bring the hot cross bun into pie format! They are part of our Deliciously Good range meaning that they’re non-HFSS compliant - providing consumers with a healthier, sweet Easter treat. Throughout the process, I’ve learnt a lot about the stages of product development and the challenges that come with it. Not only that, but my leadership, problem solving and interpersonal skills have developed over the course of the project too. To see my product on the supermarket shelves is incredibly rewarding, it’s something that I will remember forever! A big thank you to all my colleagues who have supported and directed me along the way.

FareShare UK are a charity that redistributes food to those who need it the most, particularly important with the tough times that many are currently facing. Through the partnership of Premier Foods and FareShare UK, I had a great morning this week volunteering at my local Tesco, trying to boost food donations and raise awareness of the amazing work the charity are doing. If you can spare any items when you’re next doing your food shop, please look for the donation basket on your way out!

During my first week at Premier Foods as a Student Technologist for Mr Kipling and Customer Brand, I was given the opportunity to be part of a trial, to get stuck into baking in the test kitchen and to experience the day-to-day tasks that keep the company moving. A special thank you to all of the team for taking time out of their days to make my first week so memorable. In only a short space of time, I have learnt a lot and look forward to continuing to build my knowledge around NPD and the food industry. I can’t wait to see what the next year has in store!
