Is Max the same as HBO Max? ›

Max, formerly and still known in some regions as HBO Max, is an American subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming service. It is a proprietary unit of Warner Bros. Discovery Global Streaming & Interactive Entertainment, which is itself a division of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD).

You are able to stream Max by renting or purchasing on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and Vudu.

The Streaming Home of HBO. There's a change coming soon: the introduction of Max. Max is the enhanced service replacing HBO Max. The service will feature iconic programming, including all the HBO content you already love, like Game of Thrones.

If you're a current HBO Max subscriber, you won't need to sign up for Max. The HBO Max app will either automatically update to Max, or when you open HBO Max, you'll be prompted to download the Max app. That's it—happy streaming!

Why is HBO Max change to Max? ›

To make the flagship streamer look more “family friendly”: Warner Bros. Discovery executives ultimately felt that the HBO name was somehow restricting HBO Max's uptake among households with children.

Though Max includes a lot of the content that you can find on Discovery Plus, the two platforms remain available as separate services. If you're a Discovery Plus member, you can keep your Discovery Plus membership with no additional fees. And viewers can still sign up for Discovery Plus on its own.

Warner Bros. Discovery announced HBO Max would become Max, to reflect that they'll be combining HBO Max with content from the Discovery+ platform. In essence, Max is just HBO Max in blue with even more content.

Max's paid subscriptions start at $9.99 ($99.99 a year) for ad-supported streaming, or $15.99 ($149.99 a year) to watch ad free. The Ultimate ad-free package is $19.99 per month and includes 4K Ultra HD quality, 100 downloads to watch on the go and you can stream on up to four devices at once.

Verdict: It's HBO to the Max

Even with its ongoing upheaval, Max offers a varied content library including classic HBO shows, popular movies, anime, live news and sports, and reality TV. Max's apps are well-designed, the ad-free tier supports offline downloads, and the Ultimate tier has 4K streaming.

Prime Video has added Max to its lineup of channels which includes Paramount+, Starz, BET+, AMC+, Discovery+ and other streamers that you can add to your subscription. Max is available ad-free for $15.99/month but Prime Video is not currently offering a free trial to Max (you can however enjoy a free trial to Prime).

The Max app will become the streaming home of HBO. If you're an HBO Max subscriber, one of two things will happen on launch day (May 23rd): Your HBO Max app will automatically update to Max. You'll be prompted to download the new Max app.
