Pana’s Griffin Kimbrel was forced to try track as a middle schooler, so he decided to pick out the most interesting thing he could.

That ended up being the pole vault, one of the more unique and events out there. He struggled initially and said that most people have to be crazy to stick it out, but that’s exactly what he did. Now he’s a sectional champion and state title contender after his performance at the IHSA Class 1 sectional at Okaw Valley High School on Wednesday.

"I was like, oh, pole vault sounds fun, I'll try it and apparently I turned out to be decent at it," Kimbrel said.

Kimbrel hit a personal record of over 15 feet and the crowd roared and runners in the middle of the 3200-meter race all looked over to see what had just happened. It ended up being Kimbrel cementing his sectional title.

"There's no better feeling in the world than PR-ing," Kimbrel said. "It's everything you always look for."
