What are white goods?

White goods, or home appliances, are medium to large appliances in the home that we use for everyday tasks. Think most machines in your kitchen or utility room, including:

  • Ovens and cookers

  • Dishwashers

  • Washing machines

Specific home appliance insurance is not part of your home insurance. It covers white goods bought from a retailer for breakdowns and accidental damage.

Does Home Insurance cover appliance breakdowns?

Unfortunately, our Home Insurance does not cover appliances if they break down. However if you purchased your item fromJohn Lewis, your appliance comes with a minimum 2 year guarantee. This covers breakdown and mechanical failure.

OurBuildings Insurancecovers loss or damage caused bywater escaping- due to aburst pipe, for example. But the appliance from which the water escapes will not be covered.

You may also like to consider John Lewis Home Emergency Cover. This usually covers boilers and heating systems - which aren’t white goods. It can also cover the cost of a temporary repair in an emergency.

Accidental damage and white goods

Whether it’s swinging a fridge door open onto a hard surface or dropping a heavy object on your cooker, accidents happen.

Bronze, Silver and Gold customers can add accidental damage cover to their contents insurance. This covers white goods against accidental damage - for example, if you leave coins in a pocket when you wash your jeans. It doesn’t cover mechanical, electrical or electronic fault or breakdown.

Specialist Home Insurance customers are covered against accidental damage as standard.

John Lewis appliances come with a minimum 2 year guarantee covering breakdown and mechanical failure.
